RESUMO Auchenipteridae é dividida nas subfamílias Centromochlinae e Auchenipterinae. Parauchenipterus encontra-se incluído na última e tem sido alvo de discussões relacionadas com a problemática taxonômica de validação ou sinonimização com Trachelyopterus. Foram analisadas citogeneticamente três espécies de duas bacias hidrográficas: Parauchenipterus striatulus do rio Doce, P. galeatus e Trachelyopterus coriaceus, simpátricas do rio Araguaia. Todas as espécies analisadas apresentaram número diploide de 58 cromossomos, com diferença na fórmula cariotípica de P. striatulus. A heterocromatina foi localizada nas regiões terminais de quase todos os cromossomos e na região pericentromérica nos cromossomos acrocêntricos das três espécies. AgNORs e DNAr 18S detectaram RONs simples em um par de cromossomos subtelocêntricos nas três espécies. DNAr 5S foi detectado em três pares de cromossomos submetacêntricos em P. striatulus; em um par de cromossomos metacêntricos e um par submetacêntrico em T. coriaceus; e em apenas um par de cromossomos metacêntricos em P. galeatus. As semelhanças encontradas nos cariótipos das três espécies analisadas indicam a existência de somente Trachelyopterus (não validação de Parauchenipterus) e a diferença encontrada na distribuição de DNAr 5S de P. galeatus em relação às outras populações já estudadas sugere a existência de uma nova unidade taxonômica, portanto P. galeatus compreende um complexo de espécies.

ABSTRACT Auchenipteridae is divided into subfamilies Centromochlinae and Auchenipterinae. Parauchenipterus is included in the latter and is subject of taxonomic discussions concerning its validation or synonymization with Trachelyopterus. Herein, three species from two hydrographic basins were cytogenetically analyzed: Parauchenipterus striatulus from Doce River and two sympatric species, P. galeatus and Trachelyopterus coriaceus, from the Araguaia River. Diploid number of 58 chromosomes was verified for all species, but P. striatulus has different karyotype formula from the others. The three species have heterochromatin located in terminal regions of almost all chromosomes and in pericentromeric region on acrocentric chromosomes. Simple NORs was verified on a subtelocentric chromosome for all species. 5S rDNA sites were detected in three submetacentric chromosome pairs in P. striatulus; in a metacentric chromosome pair and submetacentric pair in T. coriaceus; and in one metacentric chromosome pair in P. galeatus. The similarities found in the karyotypes of the three species suggest the existence of only one genus, Trachelyopterus; therefore, our data refutes the validation of Parauchenipterus. Moreover, the differences in 5S rDNA distribution in P. galeatus in comparison with other populations already studied, indicate the existence of a new taxonomic unit, which suggests a species complex in P. galeatus.

Abstract The aim of this paper was to present the second case of B chromosomes in Auchenipteridae (Trachelyopterus sp.), and to test the hypothesis that the B chromosomes of this species and Parauchenipterus galeatus might have a common origin, since these two species have phylogenetic proximity. Both species have 58 chromosomes in the A complement, heterochromatin preferentially located at terminal region of the most of chromosomes, simple Ag-NORs located at the short arm of a subtelocentric pair, which was confirmed by hybridization with 18S rDNA, two submetacentric pairs carrying 5S rDNA sites, and presence of B chromosomes. The B chromosomes of the two species are small, metacentric, and almost totally heterochromatic, with variation of number intra and interindividual. In addition, for the first time in fish, the telomeric sequence [TTAGGG]n was dispersed along the B chromosomes (both species). The [GATA]n microsatellite were scattered in all chromosomes of the A complement and absent in the B chromosomes, in both species. These aspects confirm the phylogenetic proximity between the genus Parauchenipterus and Trachelyopterus, and they suggest the hypothesis that the B chromosomes of the two species might have common origin, previous to the diversification of these genera.

Abstract Doradinae (Siluriformes: Doradidae) is the most species-rich subfamily among thorny catfishes, encompassing over 77 valid species, found mainly in Amazon and Platina hydrographic basins. Here, we analyzed seven Doradinae species using combined methods (e.g., cytogenetic tools and Mesquite ancestral reconstruction software) in order to scrutinize the processes that mediated the karyotype diversification in this subfamily. Our ancestral reconstruction recovered that 2n=58 chromosomes and simple nucleolar organizer regions (NOR) are ancestral features only for Wertheimerinae and the most clades of Doradinae. Some exceptions were found in Trachydoras paraguayensis (2n=56), Trachydoras steindachneri (2n=60), Ossancora punctata (2n=66) and Platydoras hancockii whose karyotypes showed a multiple NOR system. The large thorny catfishes, such as Pterodoras granulosus, Oxydoras niger and Centrodoras brachiatus share several karyotype features, with subtle variations only regarding their heterochromatin distribution. On the other hand, a remarkable karyotypic variability has been reported in the fimbriate barbells thorny catfishes. These two contrasting karyoevolution trajectories emerged from a complex interaction between chromosome rearrangements (e.g., inversions and Robertsonian translocations) and mechanisms of heterochromatin dispersion. Moreover, we believe that biological features, such as microhabitats preferences, populational size, low vagility and migratory behavior played a key role during the origin and maintenance of chromosome diversity in Doradinae subfamily.

RESUMO Historicamente, há divergências na alocação de espécies entre Centromochlus e Tatia. Este estudo teve como objetivo gerar os primeiros dados citogenéticos para Centromochlus e, através da análise de uma população de Centromochlus heckelii da bacia do rio Amazonas, contribuir como evidência para o dilema histórico taxonômico. Foi encontrado o número diploide de 46 cromossomos e um par heteromórfico nos cariótipos das fêmeas, o que caracteriza um sistema sexual ZZ/ZW. Blocos pálidos de heterocromatina foram localizados na região centromérica de alguns cromossomos; no entanto, o cromossomo exclusivo das fêmeas (W) se apresenta quase todo heterocromático. As AgRONs foram detectadas na posição terminal do braço curto de um par acrocêntrico nos machos e em dois pares cromossômicos nas fêmeas, um par de cromossomos acrocêntricos e o par sexual. Notáveis diferenças entre os dados cromossômicos de Centromochlus heckelii e os dados anteriores das espécies de Tatia são: menor número diploide, presença de sistema de cromossomos sexuais e AgRONs múltiplas em Centromochlus, enquanto espécies de Tatia apresentam AgRON simples e ausência de cromossomos acrocêntricos. Resultados deste estudo mostram que marcadores cromossômicos podem contribuir como evidência para estudos de delimitação taxonômica.

ABSTRACT Historically, there are divergences in the species allocation between Centromochlus and Tatia. This study aimed to generate the first cytogenetic data about Centromochlus and, by analyzing a population of Centromochlus heckelii from the Amazon River basin, to contribute as evidence to a historical taxonomic dilemma. Diploid number of 46 chromosomes and a heteromorphic pair was found in the female karyotypes, thus characterizing a ZZ/ZW sex chromosome system. Pale blocks of heterochromatin were located in centromeric regions of some chromosomes; however, the exclusive female chromosome (W) is almost entirely heterochromatic. AgNORs were detected in terminal position on the short arms of one acrocentric pair in males and two chromosome pairs in females, the acrocentric plus the sex chromosome pair. Notable differences between Centromochlus heckelii and previous data about species of Tatia are: lower diploid number, presence of a sex chromosome system and multiple AgNORs in Centromochlus, while species of Tatia have simple AgNORs and the absence of acrocentric chromosomes. Results in this study show that chromosomal markers could contribute as evidence to taxonomic delimitation studies.

RESUMO Gymnorhamphichthys britskii é um peixe neotropical da família Rhamphichthyidae descrita no sistema Paraná-Paraguai. Este estudo relata a primeira descrição cariotípica de G. britskii coletado na bacia do alto rio Paraná, que apresentou 2n = 38 cromossomos, cariótipo composto por 14 metacêntricos, 8 submetacêntricos, 2 subtelocêntricos e 14 acrocêntricos, e número fundamental 62 para ambos sexos. Cromossomos sexuais heteromórficos estavam ausentes. Um único par de regiões organizadoras de nucléolos (RONs) foi detectado no par de cromossomos submetacêntricos número 9 por coloração com prata e confirmado pela sonda DNAr 18S. O DNAr 5S foi localizado em um único par cromossômico. Regiões heterocromáticas foram claramente observadas nos braços curtos do par de cromossomos que carrega a RON e nas posições teloméricas da maioria dos cromossomos acrocêntricos. Além dos dados presentes serem valiosos para auxiliar na compreensão da evolução cariotípica em Rhamphichthyidae, dados de RONs confirmaram a tendência desta família em apresentar sítios simples de RONs, semelhantes aos demais clados de Gymnotiformes. No entanto, a presença de um grande bloco heterocromático no cromossomo portador da RON, pode ser usado como marcador citogenético para G. britskii e as fusões cêntricas parecem ser um mecanismo importante na evolução e diferenciação cariotípica entre as espécies de Gymnotiformes.

ABSTRACT Gymnorhamphichthys britskii is a Neotropical electric fish of family Rhamphichthyidae described from the Paraná-Paraguay system. This study reports the first karyotypic description of G. britskii collected from the upper Paraná river basin, which presented 2n=38 chromosomes, karyotype composed of 14 metacentric, 8 submetacentric, 2 subtelocentric and 14 acrocentric chromosomes, and fundamental number as 62 for both sexes. Heteromorphic sex chromosomes were absent. A single pair of nucleolar organizing regions (NORs) was detected in the submetacentric chromosome pair number 9 by silver staining and confirmed by the 18S rDNA probe. The 5S rDNA was located in a single chromosome pair. Heterochromatic regions were clearly observed in the short arms of the NOR-bearing chromosome pair and in the telomeric positions of most acrocentric chromosomes. Besides the present data are valuable to help in understanding karyotypic evolution in Rhamphichthyidae, data from NORs confirmed the tendency of this family in presenting simple NORs sites, similar to the other Gymnotiformes clades. Yet, the presence of a large heterochromatic block in the NOR-bearing chromosome can be used as cytogenetic markers for G. britskii, and that centric fusions appear to be an important mechanism in the karyotype evolution and differentiation among Gymnotiformes species.

RESUMO Bryconamericus é um grupo altamente diverso de caracídeos, sendo a citogenética uma valiosa ferramenta para a delimitação de espécies. Bryconamericus aff. iheringii (Alto Uruguai/Baixo Paraná), B. coeruleus (Alto Paraná), B. cf. ecai e B. cf. eigenmanni (Alto Uruguai) foram estudados citogeneticamente, e apresentaram 2n=52 cromossomos, com variação interpopulacional/interespecífica de cariótipo e número fundamental (NF). Heterocromatinas foram evidenciadas nas regiões pericentromérica, telomérica e intersticial, e mostrou-se um importante marcador citogenético. Regiões organizadores de nuclcéolos (RONs) simples foram encontradas em B. cf. eigenmanni, B. cf. ecai e B. aff. iheringii (Baixo Paraná), e múltiplas em B. aff. iheringii (Alto Uruguai) e em B. coeruleus, com a ocorrência de dois padrões de localização para a primeira espécie, e três para a segunda. A FISH-DNAr 5S/18S confirmou a localização das RONs e mostrou cístrons simples de DNAr 5S apenas em B. aff. iheringii (Baixo Paraná), evidenciando a dispersão de ambos os genes, muitas vezes co-localizados, no cariótipo das demais espécies. Os dados deste trabalho contribuem para a delimitação das espécies do gênero. A co-localização dos genes ribossomais pode representar uma condição plesiomórfica para o grupo, e sua dispersão sugere a ocorrência de eventos de duplicação, pseudogenização e transposição mediada por elementos genéticos móveis.

ABSTRACT Bryconamericus is a highly diverse group of characid fishes, being cytogenetic a valuable tool for the delimitation of species. Bryconamericus aff. iheringii (Upper Uruguay/Lower Paraná), B. coeruleus (Upper Paraná), B. cf. ecai e B. cf. eigenmanni (Upper Uruguay) were studied cytogenetically, and presented 2n=52 chromosomes, with interpopulational/interspecific variation of karyotype and fundamental number. Heterochromatin was evidenced in pericentromeric, telomeric and interstitial regions, and it was shown to be an important cytogenetic marker. Single nucleolar organizing regions (NORs) were found in B. cf. eigenmanni, B. cf. ecai and B. aff. iheringii (Lower Paraná), and multiple in B. aff. iheringii (Upper Uruguay) and B. coeruleus, with occurrence of two patterns for the first species, and three for the second. The 5S/18S rDNA-FISH confirmed the location of the NORs and showed single 5S rDNA cistrons only in B. aff. iheringii (Lower Paraná), evidencing the dispersion of both genes, often co-located, in the karyotype of the others species. The data of this work contribute for the delimitation of the species of the genus. Co-localization of ribosomal genes may represent a plesiomorphic condition for the group, and their dispersion suggest the occurrence of duplication, pseudogeneization and transposition events mediated by mobile genetic elements.

Resumo: O conhecimento das espécies de peixes existentes em uma bacia hidrográfica é condição mínima necessária para a implantação de qualquer medida de manejo dos recursos hídricos e pesqueiros. Dessa forma, o objetivo deste estudo foi realizar uma atualização da composição das espécies de peixes da bacia do rio Piquiri, sistema do alto rio Paraná, proveniente de recentes informações contidas em estudos divulgados na literatura especializada e registros de espécies depositadas em coleções ictiológicas. A atualização do levantamento ictiofaunístico da bacia do rio Piquiri revelou a ocorrência de 152 espécies, as quais foram distribuídas em oito ordens, 31 famílias e 89 gêneros. Vinte por cento das espécies foram consideradas não nativas. O principal vetor de introdução foi a construção da barragem de Itaipu e seu sistema de transposição. Três por cento das espécies apresentaram alguma ameaça de extinção e 11% foram classificadas como migradoras. A bacia do rio Piquiri comporta grande número de espécies, algumas delas raras, ameaçadas de extinção, migradoras, endêmicas e até mesmo desconhecidas pela ciência. Dessa forma, a manutenção da integridade da bacia promoverá a persistência da biodiversidade regional.

Abstract: Knowledge of the fish species in river basins is among the minimum requirements for the management of water and fish resources. Therefore, the aim of this study was to update the fish species composition of the Piquiri River basin, upper Paraná River basin. Data were gathered from recent information published in specialized literature and records for ichthyology collections. This update reports the occurrence of 152 fish species distributed in 8 orders, 31 families, and 89 genera. Non-native species accounted for 20% of all species, and the construction of the Itaipu Power Plant and its fish ladder were the main vectors of introduction. Three percent of the species were endangered, and 11% were classified as migratory. The Piquiri River basin harbors a large number of species, some of which are rare, endangered, migratory, endemic, and even unknown by science. Because of this, maintaining the integrity of this river basin will support the persistence of regional biodiversity.

Cromossomos B são cromossomos extras ao conjunto cromossômico normal, encontrado em diferentes organismos, com destaque para sua presença no grupo de peixes. Callichthys callichthys do alto rio Paraná tem um número diploide de 56 cromossomos (26 m-sm+ 30 st-a) para ambos os sexos, com a presença esporádica de um cromossomo B acrocêntrico. Além do mais, um indivíduo apresentou número diploide de 57 cromossomos, com a presença de um cromossomo B acrocêntrico morfologicamente mal definido em todas as células analisadas. O mapeamento físico do DNAr 5S e 18S mostrou múltiplos sítios de DNAr 5S e apenas um par de cromossomos com sítio para o DNAr 18S em C. callichthys, com exceção para dois indivíduos. Estes dois indivíduos apresentaram um terceiro cromossomo portador das RONs (Ag-RONs e 18S rDNA), onde os genes DNAr 5S e 18S são sintênicos, diferindo apenas na posição. A dispersão dos genes DNAr 18S do par de cromossomos principal st-a 25 para um dos cromossomos do par m-sm 4 teria originado dois indivíduos variantes, um dos quais com cromossomo B acrocêntrico mal definido. Mecanismos para justificar a hipótese sugerida sobre a origem deste cromossomo B são discutidos no presente estudo.

B chromosomes are extra chromosomes from the normal chromosomal set, found in different organisms, highlighting their presence on the group of fishes. Callichthys callichthys from the upper Paraná River has a diploid number of 56 chromosomes (26 m-sm + 30 st-a) for both sexes, with the presence of a sporadically acrocentric B chromosome. Moreover, one individual presented a diploid number of 57 chromosomes, with the presence of a morphologically ill-defined acrocentric B chromosome in all analyzed cells. The physical mapping of 5S and 18S rDNA shows multiple 5S rDNA sites and only one pair of chromosomes with 18S sites in C. callichthys, except for two individuals. These two individuals presented a third chromosome bearing NORs (Ag-staining and 18S rDNA) where 5S and 18S rDNA genes are syntenic, differing only in position. The dispersion of the 18S rDNA genes from the main st-achromosome pair 25 to one of the chromosomes from the m-sm pair 4 would have originated two variant individuals, one of which with the ill-defined acrocentric B chromosome. Mechanisms to justify the suggested hypothesis about this B chromosome origin are discussed in the present study.

Ageneiosus é o gênero da família Auchenipteridae mais amplamente distribuído em bacias da América do Sul. Apesar dos estudos cromossômicos nesta família serem escassos, este gênero tem o maior número de espécies analisadas, com número diploide variando de 54 a 56 cromossomos, o que difere do restante da família (2n = 58). Este estudo objetivou analisar Ageneiosus inermisda bacia do rio Araguaia. O número diploide encontrado foi de 56 cromossomos. A heterocromatina se mostrou localizada na região terminal da maioria dos cromossomos, além de um bloco heterocromático pericentromérico no par 1, um par facilmente distinguível no cariótipo pelo seu maior tamanho quando comparado aos outros pares do complemento. AgRONs foram detectadas em somente um par de cromossomos submetacêntricos, que foi confirmado pela FISH. 5S rDNA se mostrou presente em somente um par de cromossomos metacêntricos. A hibridização com a sequência [TTAGGG]n marcou os telômeros de todos os cromossomos, além de um ITS (sequência telomérica intersticial) na região proximal do braço curto do par 1. A sequência repetitiva [GATA]n se mostrou dispersa, com localização preferencial na região terminal dos cromossomos. Ageneiosus apresenta uma organização genômica um pouco diferente quando comparada a outras espécies de Auchenipteridae. As evidências indicam que uma fusão cromossômica originou o primeiro par de cromossomos metacêntricos de A. inermis, rearranjo que parece ser um evento basal para o gênero.

Ageneiosus is the most widely distributed genus of the family Auchenipteridae among South American river basins. Although chromosome studies in the family are scarce, this genus has the largest number of analyzed species, with 2n = 54 to 56 chromosomes, differing from the rest of the family (2n = 58). This study aimed to analyze Ageneiosus inermis from the Araguaia River basin. The diploid number found was of 56 chromosomes. Heterochromatin was allocated in terminal region of most chromosomes, plus a pericentromeric heterochromatic block in pair 1, a pair distinguished by size in relation to other chromosomes pairs. AgNORs were detected in only one submetacentric chromosome pair, which was confirmed by FISH. 5S rDNA was present in only one metacentric chromosome pair. Hybridization with [TTAGGG]n sequence marked the telomeres of all chromosomes, in addition to an ITS in the proximal region of the short arm of pair 1. The repetitive [GATA]n sequence was dispersed, with preferential location in terminal region of the chromosomes. Ageneiosus has a genomic organization somewhat different when compared to other Auchenipteridae species. Evidences indicate that a chromosomal fusion originated the first metacentric chromosome pair in A. inermis, rearrangement which may be a basal event for the genus

O padrão de colorido é um caráter muito importante na sistemática e alfa taxonomia de espécies do gênero Gymnotus. O objetivo deste trabalho foi apresentar evidências de variação no padrão de colorido em populações locais de Gymnotus pantanal encontrados nos córregos Jacutinga e Pinheirinho, bacia do alto rio Paraná, sul do Brasil. A variação no padrão de colorido foi corroborada por dados morfológicos e citogenéticos. Nossos resultados demonstram a importância da integração de dados morfológicos e citogenéticos na taxonomia de espécies de Gymnotus.

Color pattern is an important character in the systematics and alpha-taxonomy of electric fishes of the genus Gymnotus. This paper presents evidence of color variation in populations of G. pantanal found in the streams Jacutinga and Pinheirinho, in the upper Paraná River basin, southern Brazil. Color variations were corroborated for morphological and cytogenetic data. Our results show the importance of integrating morphologic and cytogenetic data in the taxonomy of the Gymnotus species.

Três populações do grupo Hoplias malabaricus das bacias hidrográficas dos rios São Francisco, Araguaia/Tocantins e Xingu foram analisadas citogeneticamente utilizando-se métodos clássicos (coloração com Giemsa, bandamento-C e Ag-RONs) e moleculares (hibridização in situ fluorescente com sondas de rDNA 18S, rDNA 5S e DNA satélite 5SHindIII). Os marcadores cromossômicos foram fundamentais para a caracterização destas populações como pertencentes ao cariomorfo A e para detecção de claras divergências interpopulacionais. Estas diferenças são provavelmente oriundas de diferentes histórias evolutivas do isolamento geográfico entre as populações associado ao modo dispersivo destes organismos, reiterando a diversidade genética do grupo Hoplias malabaricus.

Three populations of the group Hoplias malabaricus from the hydrographic basins of the São Francisco, Araguaia/Tocantins and Xingu Rivers in Brazil were analyzed using classic cytogenetic methods (Giemsa staining, C-banding and Ag-NORs) and molecular methods (fluorescent in situ hybridization with 18S rDNA, 5S rDNA and 5SHindIII satellite DNA probes). The chromosome markers allowed the characterization of these populations as belonging to karyomorph A and the detection of inter-population divergences. These differences likely stem from different evolutionary histories resulting from geographic isolation between populations associated to the dispersive mode of these organisms, reinforcing genetic diversity in the group Hoplias malabaricus.

Two Siluriformes species endemic to the São Francisco River basin were characterized by conventional and differential cytogenetic analyses involving C-banding, Ag-nucleolar organizer region (NOR) and chromomycin A3 (CMA3) staining, and FISH (fluorescent in situ hybridization) with 18S and 5S rDNA probes. Conorhynchus conirostris presents a higher diploid number (2n = 60) than those detected in Pimelodidae representatives, whereas Lophiosilurus alexandri, with a karyotype of 2n = 54 chromosomes, presents a chromosomal constitution similar to that found in the family Pseudopimelodidae. Plesiomorphic characteristics such as single NORs at terminal positions are found in both species, as revealed by CMA3 and silver nitrate staining, and FISH with a 18S rDNA probe. C-banding evidenced centromeric and telomeric heterochromatic blocks distributed over most of the chromosomes with a conspicuous heterochromatin segment in a pair of submetacentric chromosomes in L. alexandri. Such karyotype data, if compared to the cytogenetic pattern of other Siluriformes species, can be partially related to their degree of endemism, favorable to the occurrence and fixation of chromosomal rearrangements. The present study in representatives from these two Siluriformes families from the São Francisco River contributes to a better understanding of the karyotype evolution in species of this important order of Neotropical fishes.

The Neotropical Heptapteridae fish Imparfinis hollandi, endemic to the Iguaçu River Basin (Brazil), was cytogenetically analyzed and the diploid chromosome number of 2n = 42 chromosomes was determined (22m + 10sm + 10st), the lowest diploid number in this genus and family. Like other Heptapteridae species, only one NOR-bearing chromosome pair was detected by silver nitrate staining. Dark heterochromatic blocks were visualized in only three chromosome pairs, and chromomycin A3+ bands were coincident with Ag-NORs. Although no intercalary (TTAGGG)n sequence was observed through FISH with a telomere probe, an asymmetric karyotype showing four large chromosome pairs with diploid chromosome number reduction suggests that tandem chromosome fusions probably occurred during the karyotypic differentiation of Imparfinis hollandi.

No presente trabalho foram analisadas três espécies do gênero Oligosarcus: O. paranensis, O. pintoi e O. longirostris. As três espécies possuem número diplóide de 50 cromossomos e mesma fórmula cariotípica (4M + 10SM + 16ST + 20A). A impregnação por nitrato de prata revelou RONs simples para O. longirostris e RONs múltiplas para O. paranensis e O. pintoi. A heterocromatina desempenha um importante papel na caracterização das espécies. Hipóteses sobre a especiação do grupo são apresentadas com base nos dados citogenéticos obtidos neste trabalho, reforçando a importância destes estudos para uma melhor compreensão da evolução tanto do gênero Oligosarcus quanto da família Characidae.

Karyotypic studies were carried out on three species of the genus Oligosarcus: O. paranensis, O. pintoi, and O. longisrostris. All of them showed a diploid number of 50 chromosomes and the same karyotypic formulae (4M + 10SM + 16ST + 20A). Silver nitrate staining revealed single NORs in O. longirostris and multiple NORs in O. paranensis and O. pintoi. Heterochromatin seemed to play an important role in the chromosomal diversification of these species. Based on cytogenetical data, speciation hypotheses within this group were proposed, reinforcing the importance of chromosomal studies for a better understanding of evolution within the genus Oligosarcus, as well as within the family Characidae.

Although several cases of natural triploidy in fish have already been described, spontaneous polyploidy in species with differentiated sex chromosomes are rare. We report the occurrence of a triploid fish (3n = 81) Leporinus cf. elongatus, a species characterized by a highly differentiated ZZ/ZW sex chromosome system, from the São Francisco river. The occurrence of a ZZZ triploid adult indicates the viability of this chromosome constitution in this fish.
